Packing Tips
Here are a few pointers to keep
in mind when packing items into
moving boxes. Before you start
packing you’re going to need a
work surface to pack on. An
adjustable table or counter top
is always recommended. Crinkle
up four to eight pieces of
packing paper before you start
loading and place them at the
bottom of the moving box. This
will provide a great layer of
protection for your valuable
items. Pack heavier items to the
bottom of the box, lighter items
to the top. This will help
prevent items from being crushed
during moving. Pack the boxes
tightly as possible without
damaging the items. Packing per
density is important because it
prevents items from shifting
during transit. Make sure you
line all empty spaces in the box
with crinkled packing paper or
peanuts to keep the items from
shifting. |
Pack cartoons tightly if a carton rattles or makes noise the contents could be damaged in transit. Blankets and other soft goods could fill the extra space in not quite full cartoons. An interesting note to remember is that the larger the box is the lighter and bulkier are its’ contents. So pack heavier items into smaller boxes and do not over pack larger boxes. The most important thing to remember is you have to carry it. Don’t leave packing for the last minute you’ll have so much to do. Give yourself enough time to gather all the packing materials that you’re going to need, your moving boxes, your paper, your markers, your tape, and all the other packing materials we talked about. Don’t underestimate how much you own.
Start packing several weeks before your
move. Take inventory of your home,
make a list and catalogue all your
possessions. Set aside valuables you
won’t load on the truck. Like
documents and most importantly your
jewelry. Don’t be a pack rat.
Dispose of items you no longer want,
have a yard sale, a garage sale, or
make a donation. If you haven’t used
it in a year, throw it out. Pack
belongings that you don’t often use
first and save the items that you
use on a daily basis for last. Keep
in mind that there are going to be a
variety of items you are going to
need as soon as you arrive in your
new home. As you pack make sure you
identify each moving box very
specifically. If your boxes don’t
have a labeling chart write directly
on the box, identify the room, where
the box will go, what the contents
of the box are and what side up the
box should be placed. Never ever
pack flammable items such as fuel or
aerosols. |

Packing up the
Kitchen
We will now provide you with specific information as to how to pack up your possessions for moving. Obviously, one of the most important rooms to pack up is the kitchen, use the kitchen or dish pack moving boxes for loading the contents of the kitchen. Don’t forget fill the bottom of the box with a layer of protection. Use crinkled paper probably about 8 sheets. This will provide a cushion for your very fragile kitchen items.
Since you’ll want to
place your plates at the
bottom of the dish pack
start packing your china
with the plates first.
Take one plate at a time
and place it in a safety
packed foam pouch. Then
take three of the filled
pouches and place them
in the middle of the
white packing paper.
What you will do is fold
the corners towards the
center of the plates and
we will call this the
wrap and roll technique. |
|
The corners are in the
center and roll the
plates away from you.
What you will now have
is a nice bundle of
dishes. Repeat this step
with three more plates
every time. Take your
bundles and place them
in the bottom of the
moving box. It is
important to remember to
always place dishes on
their edge and never lay
them flat in the box.
When you are finished with
your bottom level you
will begin on your
second level of the box.
Start by covering your
first level with another
layer of crinkled paper,
eight sheets usually
works well. Your second
level will be bowls,
canisters, or small
appliances. When
wrapping bowls you will
fill the center with
paper before wrapping.
Place another bowl in
the center and cushion
with packing paper. Use
the wrap and roll
technique on the bowls.
You will want to use a
couple more sheets of
packing paper to protect
your glass bowls. Wrap
and roll up a bundle and
place it in the dish
pack. When wrapping
casserole dishes with
lids remove the lid and
cover the bowl with two
sheets of paper. Use the
wrap and roll technique
we’ve already described.
Wrap the lid of the
casserole separately
also using this
technique. Place the
casserole and its lid
next to each other in
the box and on its side
for protection.
Take a
single glass and place
it in one of the glass
kit foam pouches. Then
place the filled pouch
in the center of two
pieces of white packing
paper. Cover the glass
with the paper and roll
it away from you. Fold
the corner towards the
center of the glass one
side at a time. Uboxes
could provide you with
the safety pack for the
glasses all you need to
do is put the cell
divider into a medium
box and fill the spaces
with your glasses. It
provides excellent
protection. The
procedure for wrapping
stem wear or wine
glasses is exactly the
same as it is for
regular glasses. Please
make sure when you load
your stem wear into a
box always place the
stem of the glass facing
to the top to evenly
distribute the weight of
the glass.
Now we
are going to wrap pots
and pans. Wrap the pot
with paper using the
wrap and roll technique
and then place the lid
face down in the center
of the pot, using
additional sheets of
paper to cover the
unusual shaped item. You
will use this procedure
for the assortment of
pots and pans you have
in your pantry. Since
they could be heavy pack
them in a medium box for
easy lifting. Place the
pans on edge in the box
if you have empty space
fill it with paper,
remember never over pack
your box. The top of the
box can be filled with
foils, placemats,
towels, or any loose
item.
Packing
small appliances can be
a delicate job if you’re
packing a blender remove
all three pieces and
pack them in white
packing paper
separately. First, pack
the base using the wrap
and roll technique. Next
wrap the glass pitcher
and fill the inside with
crumpled packing paper
to protect it from
cracking. Then wrap up
the lid and place all
three items next to each
other in the bottom of a
medium box. Silverware
should also be wrapped
in white packing paper.
Place two or three
spoons and forks on the
paper and roll away from
you, after one or two
revolutions add two or
three more pieces of
silverware. Fold the
corner to the center and
continue to roll. Place
your silverware at the
top level of the dish
pack, pack knives the
same way you pack the
rest of your silverware,
but be sure that you
mark knives on the
outside. You don’t want
to cut yourself as your
taking that package out
of the box. Once you’ve
filled up your dish pack
place some crinkled
paper on top, close the
flaps, and tape the box
closed. Don’t forget to
mark all pertinent
information of its
content on its side. |
