1. Shipping a Mattress
While transporting a mattress you may carry it on its side for ease of handling or use professional moving straps. While shipping a mattress it is advised to use a covered moving truck or container versus strapping the mattress to your car. It is definitely safer for yourself and other drivers using an enclosed vehicle. Besides you never know when it will rain or snow while moving potentially ruining your expensive mattress. When packing a truck remember to use rope to tie down mattresses, furniture and other heavy objects. Once the truck starts to move items could get damaged if they are able to shift or move during transport. It is always recommended to use moving blankets over heavy objects such as furniture to protect sharp edges and banging against other objects located in the moving truck.
2. Mattress In Storage
While storing a mattress in storage the mattress and box spring should be laid flat in its natural position to keep the coils in their proper place. Be sure to use a mattress moving kit that includes a plastic mattress bag to keep the moisture, dust and bugs out of the furniture. Then wrap the mattress boxes around the mattress and secure all seams with packing tape. You may want to set the mattress right on the frame in the same manner as in your bedroom to maintain the luxury of the mattress. Do not to pack a lot of items on the bed once it is storage. The weight will only settle the mattress and cause it to lose its natural shape and coil positioning. Lastly, make sure your storage unit is climate controlled to avoid humidity and dampness.
3. Unpacking the Mattress and Box Spring
When unpacking the Mattress from moving boxes and plastic mattress bag do not use a knife to slice the boxes. Using a knife to cut through the tape may accidentally cut into your mattress. Instead try to peel back the tape on the boxes and plastic bag. Once out of the boxes and packing material let your mattress breath up to several hours if it is has been in storage for a length of time. This will remove any remaining smells from the plastic.
