Many years ago your grandfather taught you the colorful art of stained glass. Together, you spent many hours in his shop fusing and crafting together beautiful opaque and transparent glass masterpieces. Now, in his later years, he has been forced to give up the art due to arthritic-stricken hands and weakening eyesight. He has asked you to carry on the skill and donated his vast assortment of supplies to you. Though grandpa’s home is only eight miles from yours, you must take extra precaution with these fragile items, carefully moving them from his shop to yours. Large panes of colored glass await you, along with cabinets of tools and materials that would make any artist drool! As you prepare to move, you stock your online shopping cart with items such as bubble  rolls, foam wrap, packing paper, packing tape and boxes for glass and accessories. While waffling through the old dusty shop, formulating your plan of action, you discover an amazing, unfinished sunflower, measuring four feet in diameter. Somehow, in all these years, and being familiar with every square inch, you had never seen this beauty as it hid behind stacks of boxes in the supply closet. Assuming granddad had forgotten it was there, you decide it will be the first project to complete once everything moves. You receive the moving supplies and begin the important work of packaging glass panes in bubble plastic wrap and filling cardboard boxes with grinders, cutters, pliers, brushes, irons, wires and patterns. After a solid days’ work, you have cleared the old shop cabinets and have the pickup bed full, and cushioned with blankets and pillows for the short trip across town. Once unpacked, you excitedly unwrap the golden inflorescence and begin cutting and soldering through the night. By mornings’ light, from the old wood rafter in front of the east window, hangs the most breathtaking flower you have ever seen. As the sun filters through each shade of yellow, warming every corner, you reminisce the many years of working side by side with grandpa. Though he’s not standing next to you in person, a piece of him will always be watching as you carry on his craft.
